Using Flour - paste resist

This week I have been doing the last of my Samples. I have been trying flour-paste resist. I felt that this technique would give the lace like quality I am trying to achieve in my printing sample. The first couple of samples  did not work very well, I must of over scrunched the fabric or the flour paste was not thick enough ( i am going to still use these). So the paint seeped into the fabric and didn't give the design that I want. so I have tried again putting a thicker paste on the fabric and not over scrunching and it is looking much  better. Tomorrow I well wash the paste off and see. This process is quite time consuming as it has been taking me 3 day to complete the technique on the fabric, most of the time is taken up with drying the fabric. Once this is done I am going to lino print a design on top.

The samples that didn't work!!

Here is my samples with the flour-paste resist still on and the fabric paint drying.

Textiles 1: Exploring Ideas

Finally I have managed to get down to some work. I have found getting this assignment done hard work as I have found that I have not been able to find the time to get this project going. But I am now seeing some progress and an end to this assignment.

I decided to look at lace and did some research on lace at different periods through history. I then look at how lace is used now in fashion and interiors. This developed into looking at how nature can form lace like patterns for example decaying leaves, spider webs, and hydrangea petals. I used some of these images to develop drawing and samples.

Here are some of my drawings and samples:

This first sample, I was exploring an image of a spiders web that I took. I burned some holes into some netting like fabric. also I tried to use making fluid to get a speckled effect but it didn't work. After doing these I did not feel that it was working or that it was an idea that I wanted to explore any further.

I next did some drawings from some decaying autumn leaves that my children picked up for me. I found the colours and the texture of them interesting and wanted to explore this further.

Here are some of the samples I did exploring further the leaves. I used mainly the colours and textures from the drawing that I did. Some of the samples did not turn out as planned such as using the wax and paint.

I did some lino printing as I aways like the texture that you get from producing images this way and I thought that I would get a texture close to that on the leaves. Some I draw on top with other colours, but that did not work either.

I then moved onto Fabric and did this sample I kept it white as I was looking at keeping it more in the theme of white and used ribbon for the outline of the leaf. I had the Italian sewn lace in mind when doing this. Again it did not come out as i planned.

I thought I would try knitting with lace but it came out too tight. I tried to knit with wool loosely but again did not work out. It was too thick and did not have the transparency that I wanted to keep to give it the feel of lace.

I then did some weaving trying to get the texture and colour of the leaf with the transparency that I wanted to keep. I feel that the top half of this sample worked well.

Here i thought I would use the contrast of a thick lino like material with a netting background. It could work well repeated all over a piece of fabric.

I have never tried felting and I thought I would have a go. even though I liked the finish result I was not transparent enough.

This sample was done with water soluble fabric. I like this sample and it has a lot of possibilities.
It has texture, colour and transparency.
